Are You Sure About This?…
Sorry folks, but if I may be so blunt, …that is a dumb question. How sure are you when making any big decision in your life? (Some people just prefer to avoid the big decisions altogether. And you know who you are!) I stand strong in the belief that both Kevin and I are good people, hard working, and strong values… and this will serve us well, and we will survive. So the answer is, I am no more certain than I was when we decided to get married, have children, change jobs, buy houses, etc, etc… We don’t know what the future holds but don’t feel this choice will result in certain and impending doom either.
For a long time now Kevin and I have held up the following as the mission for our lives:
1. To glorify God in everything we do.
The main output of this hopefully shows in how we treat all people, and how we choose to spend our time. When in conflict or doubt, we reflect on Gods word to get us back on track. We turn to the Lord everyday with gratitude for all of His grace and presence in our lives. We humbled by His blessings and rejoice in our own imperfection!
2. To provide an extraordinary life for our family
Extra-ordinary ….not super wealthy, nor the president of the company! But rather just significant, noteworthy, MORE than ordinary! Striving to be common just doesn’t sit well with us. Like many people we know, we like to spend our money, on clothes, fine dining, and other STUFF. But truth is this stuff, the cars, the houses have never made our heart sing. (Well, maybe for a moment! Once when I …oh, I digress!)
So what “does it” for us? In a word, relationships. And all relationships!!!! As children of God, as spouses, as parents, friends, community members and even strangers, WARNING: if we meet you, we are inviting you into our lives! These relationships are our gold, they fill us up, good or bad, they make us feel alive. So the thought of spending ONE FULL year to build an extraordinary family/spouse relationship in some extraordinary places, just seemed like a no-brainer to us.
It‘s really that simple.
You MUST Be Wealthy To Do This Trip!
We sure hope not, because that isn’t the case. We are making some big financial/lifestyle risks to do this. My version of wealthy would mean we didn’t need to sell our 3 bedroom nicely appointed dream home, and vehicles to do this. But we do. That is how much we want and believe in this adventure. Don’t worry we aren’t planning to touch our retirement funds! …Unless of course we decide to do the Galapagos!

WOW, WOW, WOW. Soooooo excited for you Kim, Kevin, Aaron and Brendan. You are an amazing family and will leave a wonderful mark in every village you visit. Thank you for sharing your family themes; I can see how they have guided you in making this incredible choice. I look forward to following you on your journey. Hugs to all of you!!!

Great to hear from you last weekend.
Have fun! I insist.
Keep your Spain dates updated. Team Johnston will be embarking on a Mediteranean cruise right around then. We will try to rendezvous.

I know a lot of soul searching went into this huge trip for all of you and there are definitely sacrifices along the way, but it will all be worth it.
God will protect you on this great adventure and along the way, you’ll make some lifelong friends. You will all grow so much from this experience and will see things in a whole new light!
Enjoy this journey and stop to smell the roses (or beer/wine)!!!! Stay safe!!!
Love,

Yeah, I’m thinking we’d like to pop over for a visit–bring some homemade choc chip cookies or something lame like that. I can’t belive how much you’ve done in so short a time. Its like watching our own personal The Amazing Race! I fear telling Suzanne to check out your site because I KNOW where that will lead…she could easily be your daughter (minus the curly hair). Your Adventure of a Lifetime makes one sit back and rethink the path that is being tavelled, and wonder “is this the BEST God has for me, or am I just settling”…Thank you for all the thoughts you put into your diary. It is a treasure.
